When and where is the next Solar Eclipse?

The upcoming eclipse in North America falls on April 8, 2024. You can catch a glimpse of this celestial phenomenon in its partial state from any spot on the continent. But if you want to witness the grand spectacle in all its glory, head down to the southern USA, where it gracefully sweeps across the mid east and up to Ontario, Quebec. See our map up above.

The time frame of the eclipse will be different for everyone depending on where you are looking from but in rough numbers you should expect to see activity on the sun starting at the following times and places:

10:40 PDT (Pacific Time) British Columbia
11:09 MST (Mountain Standard Time) Yukon
11:43 MDT (Mountain Time) Alberta and Saskatchewan
12:08 MDT (Mountain Time) Northwest Territories
12:50 CDT (Central Time) Manitoba
12:54 CDT (Central Time) Ontario
13:10 CDT (Central Time) Nunavut
13:54 EDT (Eastern Time) Ontario
14:08 EDT (Eastern Time) Quebec
14:22 ADT (Atlantic Time) New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador
15:26 ADT (Atlantic Time) PEI and Nova Scotia

In the path of totality it will start approximately 1 hour after the partial eclipse begins.

Where is the best place to see solar eclipse 2024?

The map above displays the 'path of totality' which indicates the optimal locations for observing the total eclipse. If you are unable to visit these areas, no need to worry! The partial eclipse can still be observed from anywhere on the continent. All you need are a pair of solar glasses, check out our suggestions below.

What do I need to see the eclipse?

Make sure to always wear proper safety gear when looking at the eclipse. We highly recommend using an ISO certified pair of solar eclipse glasses for the easiest and safest viewing experience. However, if you're looking for a more up-close view, you can consider getting a pair of solar binoculars or a solar telescope. Our suggestions below can help you find the right option for you.

Can I use my existing telescope to look at the sun? How can I use my telescope to look at the sun?

Use a solar filter! We have a great many solar filters for all telescopes. Some great options for Celestron telescopes built as a replacement for your tube cap. Other options from Kendrick and Baader that can fit a wide variety of telescopes and binoculars. See this collection:

Is it safe to wear solar glasses? Don't I need a pin-hole camera or welders glasses?

Solar glasses are the best way to view the solar eclipse and All-Star Telescope only carries 100% safe to use ISO 12312-2:2015(E) certified glasses. Every product that we carry is specifically designed with your safety in mind. Some even come with colorful tints to make viewing the sun more enjoyable.

Very few welder glasses are suitable for viewing the sun and are not designed for that purpose.

Can I order solar eclipse glasses in large quantities?
