Why we love the SkyWatcher Star Adventurer 2i Pro Pack (S20512)

SkyWatcher Star Adventurer 2i Pro Pack is the benchmark product in this category.  We think this is the best star tracker on the market today.  It has a robust 11lb payload which is more than enough for running a DSLR and a high quality camera lens for long exposures.  It's also a great option for a true ultra-light grab-and-go setup.  You can pair this with a small astrograph refractor and very reasonably hike to a mountain top, or a remote dark site for some truly beautiful imaging.

Product Description

The Star Adventurer Pro Pack is compatible with accessories like the ZWO ASIAIR and ZWO cameras.  It's also compatible with the QHY Polemaster electronic polar scope if you're looking to really nail your polar alignment.

This is a user-friendly and super versatile mount to satisfy all your needs for astronomy, astrophotography, and time-lapse photography. It is a high precision, portable, and stable celestial tracking platform for sidereal, solar, and lunar tracking with automatic DSLR shutter release control. Using a Wi-Fi signal to connect to your phone, the Star Adventurer 2i contains preprogrammed long exposures, helping you create mesmerizing time-lapse videos with your DSLR. (Camera, tripod, and optical tube are not included).

Award Winning Images

Sky-Watcher’s extremely popular family of star tracker mounts have helped revolutionize the lightweight astrophotography market making it easier and less expensive to enter into what can be a very challenging hobby. Time and again, Star Adventurer leads the pack of lightweight astroimaging mounts and helps photographers produce award-winning landscape and deep space images and stirring time-lapse videos of the night sky.

Easy Integration with Any Tripod

The declination assembly uses a specialized Vixen-style saddle plate for attaching cameras, tripod heads, or optical tubes. Attaching a ball head to this Vixen style plate provides most users with enough flexibility to point their camera around the sky freely while maintaining tracking. The Star Adventurer tracking platform can attach to a tripod using a 3/8-inch thread socket and includes an adapter for ¼-20-inch thread sizes.

Automatic Shutter Release Control

No need for an intervelometer timer with the Star Adventurer 2i! With completely programable shutter exposure settings, the 2i can trigger a DSLR using the auxiliary shutter release cable. Once the camera is plugged into the mount and a shot is fired, it will continually shoot for the programed exposures until the cable is removed.

With a payload capacity of 5kg (11 pounds), the Star Adventurer 2i is exceptional for nightscape, deep space, and time lapse photographers looking to master the entire sky utilizing every lens in their tool kit.

Excellent product for a beginner

The tool works as advertised! It is straight forward to align to celestial north and provides a solid base for equipment.
The client application that comes with the product is pretty scketchy. The instructions booklet does its best, but I found it a bit confusing for a newbie.

Overall good!

Star adventurer tripod review

The tripod is good and works for the star adventurer. The only thing I wish it had was a clip to hang any type of weight system underneath to give the tripod better stability and to be planted on the ground more. I do find when I am moving some of the parts with all the gear on the mount it likes to tip back and forth when im moving anything.

Review by a novice user

The Star Adventurer 2i is relatively easy to use, though I needed to consult with a number of YouTube channels to get started. I have only gone out a couple of time due to cloudy weather, but I am encouraged to keep going. The polar aligning step is a little difficult for people who have neck issues (which I do). Crouching down for a long period of time and looking up is a rather uncomfortable position. I suspect the difficulty will wane as I get better at polar alignment, but it would be great to be able to do this standing up. The first time I went out, I managed to lose the Polar Scope Cover. It’s probably burred in snow somewhere; that’s an easy piece to lose. The polar scope illuminator feels quite fragile and difficult to use especially when you are wearing (albeit thin) gloves. So far, it is not possible for me to use with gloves on, and I fumbled with it quite a bit while trying to keep it on the fine-tuning mounting assembly. A number of users on YouTube have complained about the same issue, so I would assume improvements are on the way(?). Unfortunately, I cannot use my 500 mm lens as it is too heavy for one counter weight. I will need to purchase another or use something to clamp onto it. Overall, the Star Adventurer 2i appears to be a solid unit worth persevering with despite my review above. Hoping for more clear skies so I can test it further. Thanks for the opportunity to submit this review!

Off to a good start with Astrophotography

I bought the SkyWatcher Star Adventurer 2i Pro Pack and the Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer Tripod. I have a decent but older DSLR that’s perfect for this, and have the SA Console app running the camera. You really need to get a ball head mount for your camera, but everything else you need is included (more clear nights would be nice!).

Excellent

The Star Adventurer has been a great addition to my kit, allowing me to take fairly long exposures with my camera at 200-300, and even at 400mm if I really take the time to dial in the balance and alignment. The documentation is very helpful and I found it relatively straightforward to use. Good battery life on AA batteries also. Highly recommended!
