William Optics RedCat 71 APO Petzval OTA (T-C-71)

T-C-71RD

When 51mm isn't quite enough you can step up to this super-sized RedCat. The same legendary optical design and premium glass in a larger aperture option. These are pretty incredible astrographs.
  • Optical Design - 71 mm lens, in a sleek Petzval design, using Synthetic Fluoride (FPL53 and FPL51) glass for a full-frame flat field image. The optical quality provides exceptional performance at a fast focal ratio of f/4.9. The Limited Edition RedCat 71 Upgrade will out resolve most high-resolution DSLR lenses of similar focal lengths.
  • Field Rotator - Inspired by luxury watches, the telescope's field rotator is laser etched with a degree indicator. To ensure that you will have the most precise framing possible in a small portable system, the camera can be rotated to fit within a degree of accuracy.
  • Filter Adapter - It is now easier to connect your filter to the Filter Adapter.
  • Filter Index - The filter index marks let you know the estimated focusing site when you twist the focuser.
  • Camera Sensor Tilt Adjuster - The Tilt Adjuster can adjust the tilt of the image plane.
  • Modular Mounting Ring - The single-tube Cat ring is sturdy enough to hold the optical tube and a large-sized DSLR without noticeable flexure. It is modular in the sense that you can add a finder scope or guide camera.
  • All New Mounting Plate - William Optics has reinvented the V-style dovetail. Not only will it fit into a Vixen style saddle plate, but if it's flipped over it can be attached to any Arca-Swiss style photography tripod head. This allows you to use the telescope for both day and night photography. The length of the new mounting plate is 210 mm.
  • Reversible Dew Shield - To maximize portability, the dew shield on this telescope is reversible. When stored backwards it can shorten the telescope length by approximately 100mm.
  • Bahtinov Cap - The cap with this telescope not only protects the glass from the elements, but it also has one of the most useful tools when it comes to focusing. The Bahtinov Cap creates three lines that pass through a bright star. There is a main large line and a smaller cross-section of two lines making an “X”. The goal is to get the large line centered between the X and centered on the star. Once that is done, you have a perfect focus in as little as 2 to 3 seconds.

Why we love the William Optics RedCat 71 APO Petzval OTA (T-C-71)

When 51mm isn't quite enough you can step up to this super-sized William Optics RedCat. The same legendary optical design and premium glass in a larger aperture option. These are pretty incredible astrographs.

Petzval's are the original fast, wide lenses. They were mathematically designed optics that were way ahead of their time when first developed in the 1840's (that's not a typo) and they are still relevant today. They're known for being flat to the edges, so you won't get any bloated or stretched stars in the corners of your images. They're also super-wide, so you can use a massive camera sensor and take in vast swaths of the night sky.

The RedCat is an advanced astrograph that takes advantage of premium modern glass, and cutting-edge camera technologies to take your astrophotography to the next level.

Product Description

The WO Cat71 is a 71-mm f/4.9 refractor using a Petzval design with a doublet front element incorporating FPL-53 glass, plus a single central element and a single rear lens. By this design, our WO Cat71 provides a flat image plane without any additional flattener and the image circle is over 45mm. WO Cat71 is designed primarily for imaging, making it an astrograph.

This scope provides an excellent colour correction and pinpoint stars at the very edge of a 45mm image circle. If you want to take images with the best quality, this beautiful and powerful telescope is what you want.

RedCat 71

The REDCAT 71 is the perfect Apochromatic refractor for photographic astronomers demanding excellence in a small sized telescope. The petzval optical design features a 71mm aperture using FPL-53 glass, and provides a flat image plane without any additional flattener. The STM-coatings and superb quality provide excellent optical performance and unmatched value.

Imaging Unit

The rear adapter ring features a M48 thread for mounting 48mm astrofilter, combined with tilt adjuster for any type of Imaging sensor, the imaging unit provides astroimager the solution to overcome any situation.

Bahtinov Mask (Patented)

The CAT dew shield features a removable lens cover, with our patented Bahtinov Mask revealed by unscrewing the face plate. The clear design allows for brighter star patterns, and precise focusing for astrophotography.
