Why we love the Sky-Watcher EvoStar 100ED APO Refractor Telescope OTA (S11120)

We love high quality refractors. These SkyWatcher doublets give crisp views with no distortion or false color. These are fantastic grab-and-go astrographs. If you're looking for a light, portable imaging rig, the Evostar should be on your short list.

Product Description

Sky-Watcher's Evostar apochromatic doublet refractors are the perfect blend of superior extra-low dispersion glass and affordability. The Evostar refractor lens assembly utilizes a proprietary combination of matched lenses, delivering tack-sharp stars with charcoal-black, contrast-rich skies. All ED glass elements are fluorite-based and feature our proprietary Metallic High-Transmission Coatings (MHTC), virtually eliminating all false color while triple-baffles prevent stray light from affecting your photography. Like the optics, the tube is beautifully crafted using aluminum and finished with a black diamond metal-flake finish.

Using a doublet refractor instead of a triplet has some advantages: less glass means less weight, less weight means a less expensive telescope, so you can dedicate more money for your camera or laptop while benefiting from a lightweight astrophotography rig.

The Evostar 100ED comes in a foam-lined aluminum case fully loaded with accessories, including: 2-inch Crayford-style focuser, 2-inch dielectric diagonal, two 1.25-inch eyepieces (5mm and 25mm), an 8x50 right-angle finderscope, tube rings, and a V-style dovetail.

EvoStar 100ED APO Refractor Telescope Review

The Sky-Watcher EvoStar 100ED APO refractor telescope is an incredible value given all that's included with the scope. This includes an 8x50 right angle finder scope, a 2" diagonal, a foam-lined aluminum case, two handy eyepieces (5 and 25 mm) and let's not forget the 100 mm diameter refracting telescope with 900 mm of focal length. This 900 mm, f/9 scope is the perfect balance between magnification and image quality through the eyepiece.

The 8x50 finder scope is a perfect addition to this instrument, making targeting deep sky objects very easy using a motor drive mount or a manual mount. Aligning the finder scope to the main tube is a bit tricky. Having a little more room in the finder scope mounting rings would make the alignment process with the main body tube a little easier.

The dovetail mounting bar makes connecting the telescope to the mount very easy. The dovetail bar also includes two 1/4" 20 threaded mounting holes for mounting the telescope to a heavy duty tripod. This is very handy when aligning the finder scope to the main body tube.

The 25 mm eyepiece provides a very comfortable experience for causal observing. The 5 mm eyepiece offers 180x magnification with a very wide field of view. This was an unexpected bonus while observing Jupiter and its moons. At this magnification, the focus is a little sensitive. This is where the 2" dual speed Crayford-style focuser and the fine adjustment **** are really handy to get a sharp focus at these larger magnifications. At these larger magnifications the focus lock **** is very important to hold a sharp focus especially with a heavy eyepiece or DSLR camera under below zero conditions.

Using an additional Sky-Watcher 2" 28 mm eyepiece provides outstanding wide angle eye comfort looking at the Pleiades, and a host of globular and open clusters. The Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies offered an outstanding show through this telescope. Keep the magnifications lower for better contrast and to reduce eye fatigue. The contrast of starlight to the background is excellent with this telescope with no experienced chromatic aberration from a dark observing site.

The Sky-Watcher EvoStar 100ED APO refractor telescope offers outstanding quality for a really good price-point.

First impressions - Excellent scope, finder scope did not work for me, eps ok

First impressions
- Excellent scope for visual work, only a few observations so far. I think this scope will be a much better balance of portability vs aperture vs my 8" dob. I bought a cheap tripod elsewhere, which was a mistake. Explore Scientific Twilight I tripod is on the way, hopefully that will work much better.
-Finder scope did not work for me. I was not able to calibrate it, may have been a build quality problem. Red dot finder on the way.
-Eyepieces are ok. 2" 38mm and 1.25" 15mm eyepieces have arrived to fill in gaps around 25 mm and 5 mm, will try these out once the proper tripod arrives.
