Why we love the ZWO AM3N Harmonic Drive Mount (ZWO-AM3N)

We believe that weight is time—or more simply, the lighter your setup, the more often you’ll be under the stars. This is especially true when you're heading to dark sites, where every pound matters. The newly upgraded AM3N keeps the same incredible lightness as its predecessor, without sacrificing any of the performance or functionality you need for serious astrophotography. It offers a robust, reliable mount in a compact, easy-to-carry package.

The AM3N integrates a range of thoughtful upgrades that make it stand out: improved cable management, tool-friendly adjustments, and built-in hex wrench storage all contribute to a streamlined, user-friendly experience. With a solid design and a fantastically light weight, this mount gives you everything you need for efficient, high-quality imaging while ensuring portability and convenience on the go. Whether you’re working in the field or under the stars, the AM3N offers the perfect balance of performance, ease of use, and mobility.

Product Description

Introducing the New AM3N: Enhanced for Precision and Convenience

ZWO is proud to announce the release of the AM3N, the next step in advanced telescope mounts. Building on the legacy of the AM3, the AM3N incorporates a host of updates designed to improve both performance and user experience for amateur astronomers.

Key Updates:

  • Integrated Cable Management: The AM3N now features power in/out ports and a USB Type-C port integrated directly into the dovetail saddle, streamlining cable organization and minimizing clutter.
  • Tool-Friendly Adjustment Knob: The redesigned adjustment handle now includes specialized holes for a hex wrench, allowing for quicker and easier mount adjustments with less effort.
  • Built-in Magnetic Hex Wrench Storage: A magnetic storage area on the side of the mount securely holds your hex wrench, ensuring it's always within easy reach when you need it.
  • Slight Increase in Weight: Due to structural upgrades, the AM3N now weighs 4.1 kg, a modest increase from the previous 3.9 kg, allowing for even more stability during operation.
  • Updated Power Consumption: Power draw has been optimized for better load stability.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity: The AM3N supports Bluetooth control, allowing you to operate the mount directly from your smartphone (wireless control requires the hand controller to be attached). Ideal for travel and field use, just bring your phone and you're ready to observe or image.
    • Tracking mode: 12V / 0.7A
    • GOTO mode: 12V / 1.3A (up to 1.8A under high-load conditions)
  • Wider Operating Temperature Range: The AM3N can now operate in temperatures ranging from -20°C to 40°C, offering improved performance even in colder climates.

Ready to take your astrophotography setup to the next level? The AM3N combines convenience, reliability, and innovation, making it the ideal mount for both seasoned astronomers and newcomers alike.

Compact, Powerful, and Built for Astrophotography

The ZWO AM3N mount redefines portable astrophotography with its lightweight design, precision control, and dual-mode operation. Developed with a strain wave gear system, this mount delivers high torque, exceptional guiding accuracy, and eliminates the need for heavy counterweights—making it perfect for on-the-go imaging without sacrificing performance.

Mount Body

The traditional equatorial mount requires heavy counterweights. It can be very difficult to keep balance in RA and DEC directions, also inconvenient for transit and storage, which bring the amateur astrophotographers a lot of pain when they are out for imaging.

Some of the strain wave geared drive mounts are relatively simple in functions, insufficient in load capacity, also not very stable in use.

The internal structure of the body optimized with the strain wave gear reducer and synchronous belt, bringing more accurate control and an amazing reduction ratio of 300:1.

Astronomy-Dedicated Strain Wave Gear

ZWO jointly developed the strain wave gearing system with well-known domestic manufacturers based on the actual needs of astrophotographers. It comes with very low periodic errors, smooth gearing and high torque. The guiding accuracy is 0.5-0.8 arc seconds, which makes the AM3N mount extremely suitable for astrophotography.

4.1kg Mount Weight, Large Load Capacity

While the portability is very important, the stability is also essential in use. We don't blindly pursue the lightweight of the mount body; we are more so along the lines of stability for entire use.

The capacity of this mount is 13kg without any counterweights attached, and increases to 20kg when using (up to) a 5kg counterweight.

Note: the counterweight should be secured on a counterweight bar of no more than 25cm in length.

Equatorial Mount / Altazimuth Mount

  • Equatorial Mount Mode: Suitable for tracking and photographing objects
  • Altazimuth Mount Mode: Suitable for observing objects
  • You can switch between these two methods with the app, or through the hand controller.

Other Features

  • Status Light Indicator
    • Red Light: Indicated equatorial mount mode
    • Green Light: Indicates altazimuth mount mode
  • All-Round 0-90 Degree Pitch Angle
    • Gear 1: Adjust the pitch angle grip to achieve any degree between 0 and 60
    • Gear 2: Loosen the hex-head screw, then adjust the pitch angle grip to achieve any degree between 45 and 90.
  • Wireless Control
    • Tonight's Target, GOTO, Live Preview, and so many great functions can be achieved through your phone. Wifi is achieved through the hand controller.
  • Rocker-Style Hand Controller

Perfect little mount. I recommend this AM3

Great little mount that I use for a portable setup. Tracking is excellent for such a low weight mount. Happy with my purchase.

Great little mount

Solid construction. Works well. Great connectivity with ASIAIR

Well made, solid performance and so much lighter and easier to manage than my Celestron CGEM. I bought the CGEM to accommodate a C9.25. In hindsight I would have been better off buying the AM5 in addition to the AM3. The ZWO is an amazing mount.
