Why we love the Sky-Watcher Classic 200P 8" Dobsonian Telescope (S11610)

Dobsonian telescopes are some of the best beginner telescopes available. They're simple to use, and open the night sky up to everyone. These scopes will give incredible views of the planets, mind blowing views of the moon, and some really interesting views of deep sky objects like galaxies and nebulas. For a bit of context, an 8 inch dobsonian telescope will gather 816 times more light than the human eye.  You'll neve outgrow these scopes, they are perfect for visual astronomy.

Featuring large apertures and easy functionality, Sky-Watcher's Classic Dobsonian is the ideal beginner scope. Often referred to as '˜light buckets', Dobsonians provide users with the highest possible aperture for their money when compared to telescopes of a similar size, such as Schmidt-Cassegrains or refractors.

Product Description

Developed in the 1970s, the Dobsonian-style telescope is an inexpensive solution for bright, detailed visual observing using a simple design. The name '˜Dobsonian' comes from the telescope's inventor, John Dobson, a Vedanta monk who popularized sidewalk astronomy and dedicated his life to astronomy outreach. Dobson was well known for constructing large aperture reflecting telescopes capable of deep sky viewing, using low cost materials. These were often made with found materials, heavy cardboard tubes, recycled porthole glass, and plywood mounts. Dobson, who literally wrote the book on how and why to make amateur telescopes, encouraged other astronomers to assemble their own telescopes and taught workshops on telescope making.

The Classic Dobsonian uses a parabolic primary mirror design, constructed of borosilicate, then polished and coated with our proprietaryRadiant Aluminum Quartz (RAQ)producing a remarkable 94% reflectivity. With an 8-inch aperture, the Classic 200P Dobsonian is 816 times brighter than the human eye! This simple yet effective design is perfect for visual observation of faint objects, such as nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies.

Supporting the Classic Dobsonian is more than just a simple rocker box. The base uses Teflon bearings for smooth, easy azimuth slewing and a patented tension control handle to lock the telescope in place. Once locked on an object, the telescope can support both 1.25-inch accessories as well as the heavier 2-inch eyepieces, allowing you to use virtually any eyepiece on the market. The Classic Dobsonian includestwo 1.25-inch eyepieces, a 1.25-inch adapter, a 2-inch eyepiece adapter, dust caps and a 9x50 finderscope.

At Sky-Watcher, we stay true to the traditional John Dobson design, using just two mirrors, a metal tube, and a simple rocker box. Although we love computerized telescopes, using a star chart to find objects by hand can be far more fulfilling and will improve your knowledge of the night sky. Unplug your electronic devices, step outside, and become immersed in the wonders of the universe.

Great scope

This year I decided to take the plunge and buy a telescope! Admittedly, I purchased a cheaper 80mm refractor first because I was scared of buying a more expensive first scope then have it go unused. After about a month, and the same amount of money spent on eyepiece upgrades, I wanted more!

Customer service and shipping was top notch and assembly of the base was a breeze.

It didn’t look as big as I thought and wondered if maybe I should have gotten the 10”. After bringing it in and out of the house a few times 8” is good. It is probably the biggest I would want to try and get through my door as a single unit.

My first object to view was Jupiter. My previous scope shown Jupiter and 4 of its moons, but I could not see any surface detail. This scope increases the brightness and clarity slightly so I was able to finally see surface detail. 😃

The increased light gathering of the 8” dobsonian gives me the clarity and detail I wanted. Very happy with my purchase.

GREAT FIRST TELESCOPE

I bought a 8" Dobsonian as my first telescope and love it!! For a newbie in this amazing hobby, the 8" dobsonian offers simplicity and easy to transport scope. I can easily move it from my leaving room to my back yard. It doesn't take too much space in my car when I travel and bring the scope with me. It come with 2 eyepieces (10 mm and 25 mm) which are perfect to get you started observing the moon, planets and other sky objects. Highly recommended for those who want to start enjoying this hobby. Finally, my purchase experience with All-Star telescope was great!!
